...Decisions about will, deeds & other legal issues, and decisions about living arrangements are of
course paramount. Yet when it is decided where your mom or dad is going to live you have more decisions to make and
you often aren't aware of them until its to late.
Medame is here to help. Today we are going to walk you through one of the more costly choices you face... whether
to rent a hospital bed using your insurance or medicare, or whether to buy a hospital bed outright.
On the face of it you would expect it would be cheaper to rent an electric bed since your medicare will cover a
large percentage of the monthly fee.
But things are not always what they seem. Unless you have an excellent supplemental insurance plan, as in all
things Medicare related, monthly fees on rental equipment are very high. Unless you are looking at terminal illness
or just need a short term solution renting a home care bed through a medicare provider will cost more out of pocket
in 8-12 months than buying one outright.
The average monthly out-of pocket-cost of a rental bed is $150 a month. (That's AFTER the insurance portion is
paid) The bed & mattress will almost certainly be used, your options will be limited, and the condition of the
bed & mattress may be suspect (not to mention who knows where they just brought the bed from, or what happened
to whoever was using that mattress last)...
...MSRP on a typical home care bed package is under $2000. For example Invacare has an electric bed,
innerspring mattress and full length bedrails as package at suggested list price of $1955.52. You will find it
online for closer to $1500, and it comes with a two year manufacturer warranty.
Simple math shows that if your parent is going to be staying with you or moving into a facility for more than 10
months then you will be saving a great deal of money over the long term by buying.
Bear in mind you will need to pick up sheets and bedding and the mattresses are usually 36 x80 inches and so you
need long twin or the fitted sheet or mattress covers wont fit right, but thats a minor expense.
